NIU NURS425 Consumer Education Paper

RUBRIC – CONSUMER EDUCATION PAPER

Total Points Possible = 50

· Papers are
due by midnight on Saturday, see schedule for date. There will be a 5 points/day deduction for
papers submitted after the due date.

· This is an
individual assignment. Each group will
be assigned a topic involving a health disorder. Each group member will be given a question to
research. Assignments will be posted at
the start of Unit 2. A separate group
forum will be set up to facilitate working on this assignment. There are no requirements for participation
in these forums.

· Each group
member will take responsibility for finding four sources of information on the
internet for answering their assigned question.
Three of those sources must be credible while the fourth must lack
credibility in some area. Using the
website evaluation tool a non-credible site would score 0-15. For example, if
the question involves the surgical management of the condition, a blog posted
by a patient or family member would raise questions of credibility. All of the
internet sources must be readily available to consumers, so sites found on
subscription databases may not be included.
The websites should be U. S. sites only as non-U. S. sites may not have
treatment or drug options approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The
focus of the assignment is on the evaluation of the sources of information for
the assigned question rather than on the disease information itself.

· Each student
will evaluate the website, using the tool that is posted under Course
Information. The following points must
be addressed in the Discussion section of this assignment in no more than four
double-spaced pages. Follow APA
guidelines (title page, header, margins, font, font size, etc.). No reference page is needed as you will be
including the full URL for the websites you will be discussing in the paper.

o Summarize your
evaluation of each website:

§ What were the
positive points about the site? What
were the drawbacks?

§ Would you recommend
this site to clients and families? Why
or why not?

§ What were the
differences and similarities of the information found related to the health
disorder question?

§ If significant differences
were found, how would you decide which information to trust?

· Information
will be submitted following the format outlined in the handout Consumer
Education Group Paper Format (posted under Course Information).

· Point totals

web site evaluation tool for each site
